Questions to Ask When Hiring a Plumber

Introduction

When hiring a plumber, it is important to ask qualifying questions to ensure that you are hiring a qualified and reliable professional. With over forty years of experience, The Clean Plumbers in St. Petersburg, FL have seen it all.  Let us suggest questions you should ask before hiring a plumber.

Recommended Questions

  1. How Long Have You Been in Business? More on-the-job experience means they can provide you with a higher quality level of work often at a faster pace than those who haven’t been on the job as long.
  2. Are You Licensed? Every state has its own set of requirements to get a plumbing license, typically, someone needs to at least have their high school diploma and complete vocational training. They then spend four to five years as an apprentice to learn all aspects of the trade and pass an exam covering plumbing questions and local codes to receive their license.
  3. Are You Insured? You should only hire a plumber if they have liability insurance and workman’s comp. if something goes wrong, you may have to pay to fix the problem yourself.
  4. Do You Offer a Warranty? Most reputable plumbers are willing to make repairs or replacements for any problems related to either the initial issue and/or the service provided for a minimum of 30 days after the service is provided.
  5. Will You Provide a Breakdown of all Fees? No reputable plumber will provide an accurate price estimate over the phone, but you can ask if they charge for travel time. Once the plumber visits your home, they will be able to provide a quote that includes labor and materials. Some plumbers charge by the hour. If your residential plumber does charge by the hour, ask for an estimate on how long it should take.
  6. If Needed, Will You Get Necessary Permits for the Work? Jobs with the potential to cause harm either to the sewer system or other people can require permits and inspection to ensure the work is completed to code.
  7. Can You Provide 2 References from Area Residents? Contact the references and ask what type of work they had the plumber perform. Then ask them what they liked most and least about working with the plumber. You can also Google their business listings to see customer comments.
  8. Will You Provide Advice to Avoid Future Plumbing Issues? Part of providing good service is helping customers prevent future repairs.
